Sik Sik Yuen Biotechnology Mobile Laboratory
A mobile classroom for biotech education

In 2009, with the support of Dr. William Mak, a world-class specialist in the field of biotechnology education, Sik Sik Yuen spent over several millions dollars to build the first “Biotechnology Mobile Laboratory” in Asia to promote science education in Hong Kong.

The MobileLab is a traveling classroom specially designed for teachers and the students to participate in hands-on, laboratory-based, scientific investigations. The MobileLab, built on a 12-metre Volvo bus platform with wheelchair access and environmental considerations like the use of solar power, is completely self-contained and providing state-of-the-art laboratory facilities for 40 students to access to equipment and instructions in learning biology with a minimum of movement from their school. With the MobileLab transported to the School, teachers and students will have direct, immediate access to the advanced instruments and equipment for the teaching and learning of science and biotechnology. Teachers will have the opportunity for on-site professional development, while the School will acquire information about building its own laboratory with the MobileLab as a template. It also provides outreach activities to promote science and biotech education among communities when schools are closed for vacation or during summer months.

The Biotech Mobile Lab overcame logistical problems that plagued centre-based learning, nimbly outreaching to students and schools over the territory, spreading biotechnology education locally as never seen before.
