Sik Sik Yuen Ho Koon Nature Education cum Astronomical Centre

Challenging the norm in conventional education, Sik Sik Yuen has established Ho Koon Nature Education cum Astronomical Centre. Located on the hillside of Tai Mo Shan, students can study nature and astronomy in the most appropriate environment, outside their classroom. At the Centre, subjects offered include natural sciences, environment education and astronomy, based on an all-round curriculum that caters for students of different levels. To broaden the mind of students, the curriculum instills a sense of curiosity and exploration regarding the natural world. In the centre is a nature footpath on which over 200 species of plants are kept. There are also a butterfly garden and an ecology pond to facilitate field studies.

One will also find an observatory at the centre equipped with dozens of small telescopes, a digital three-dimensional planetarium, and radio telescopes. Further, located in the centre is a research-grade computerized telescope. Its 0.5-meter reflecting lens has a magnifying power 5000 times that of human eyesight. With this telescope, one can observe the galaxies light years away. In order to promote and popularize the knowledge of astronomy, seminars, outreach programmes, and teacher training programmes are held for teachers, students, and the public from time to time.
